Rebekah and Rich Wood

Opening The Wolf in this historic space that housed Baywolf holds special significance for Restaurateurs Rich and Rebekah Wood: In 1996, the couple had their first dates and fell in love with each other over meals at Baywolf. Those meals also ignited the dream of owning a restaurant together, and they hoped to find a space just like Baywolf’s, someday.

In 2001, the Woods opened their first restaurant venture, Frascati, a successful bistro in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco.

Wanting to be closer to their own home and community, the couple opened Wood Tavern in Oakland in 2007, and next-door neighbor sandwich shop Southie, in 2011, both of which quickly grew into vibrant  destinations with a loyal clientele.

And now, in 2017, along with Co-Proprietor Chef Yang, Rich and Rebekah present The Wolf — in the very building where the Woods’ relationship and their restaurateur dreams began.

Yang Peng

Chef Yang started her culinary career with Rich and Rebekah in 2007 at Wood Tavern, first mastering the salad station and then quickly working her way up to becoming Executive Chef of both of the Woods’ restaurants, Wood Tavern and Southie. Born and raised in Oakland, Chef Yang is thrilled to have the opportunity to express her culinary vision as a partner in The Wolf, as well as to be able to contribute to the fabric of her community by owning a business in Oakland.

David Johnson

General Manager David Johnson joined The Wolf team in the planning stages in 2015, immersing himself in the ways of Wood Tavern and Southie restaurants and blending that with his knowledge and experience in over two decades on the staff of iconic Bay Area restaurants: Postrio in San Francisco and Baywolf in Oakland. As General Manager of The Wolf, David oversees the quality of service and fine cuisine and drink that patrons of both Baywolf and the Woods’ family of restaurants have come to expect.
